Following bariatric surgery, such as sleeve gastrectomy or gastric bypass, anatomical and physiological changes in the gastrointestinal system may lead to a significant reduction in oral intake and impaired nutrient absorption.
As a result, the risk of protein-energy malnutrition, micronutrient deficiencies—particularly iron, vitamin B12, folate, vitamin D, and calcium deficiencies—and loss of lean body mass may increase.
