Post-Bariatric Nutrition

Specialised Nutritional Support After Bariatric Surgery

Following bariatric surgery, such as sleeve gastrectomy or gastric bypass, anatomical and physiological changes in the gastrointestinal system may lead to a significant reduction in oral intake and impaired nutrient absorption.

As a result, the risk of protein-energy malnutrition, micronutrient deficiencies—particularly iron, vitamin B12, folate, vitamin D, and calcium deficiencies—and loss of lean body mass may increase. Gastrointestinal complications such as fluid intolerance, dumping syndrome, reflux, and food intolerances may also occur during both the early and late postoperative periods.

Therefore, the post-bariatric surgery period is regarded as a specialized clinical nutrition phase requiring intensive protein support, individualized micronutrient supplementation, regular medical follow-up, and close nutritional monitoring.

Nutrition After Bariatric Surgery

Intensive protein support

  • Reduced oral intake
  • Increased protein requirements
  • Approximately 1.0–1.5 g/kg of protein per day
  • Support for muscle preservation, wound healing, and recovery

Targeted micronutrient supplementation

  • High risk of micronutrient deficiencies
  • Particular attention to iron, vitamin B12, folate, vitamin D, and calcium
  • Lifelong supplementation when required

Close monitoring and follow-up

  • Regular assessment of nutritional status
  • Laboratory monitoring of micronutrients, protein status, and hydration
  • Early detection and management of deficiencies and complications

Gastrointestinal complications

  • Fluid intolerance
  • Dumping syndrome
  • Reflux
  • Food intolerances

Risk of malnutrition and changes in body composition

  • Protein-energy malnutrition
  • Loss of lean body mass
  • Reduced bone mineral density
  • Fatigue, weakness, and impaired immunity

Multidisciplinary approach

  • Collaboration among the surgeon, dietitian, physician, nurse, and psychologist
  • Individualized nutrition plan
  • Patient education and long-term adherence

Goal: To optimize nutritional status, prevent deficiencies and complications, and support long-term health and quality of life.
